Seals Able to Live on Two Hours of Sleep

- Recently, experiments have taken place in Monterey Bay, California on the elephant seals. It was discovered that they, like African elephants, are able to function all day with only two hours of sleep.
- Comparatively, other animals, such as lions, sleep for up to 20 hours per day.
- Although elephant seals sleep for as little as two hours per night when in the water, they sleep for more than ten hours a day when they live above ground.
- To further understand this newfound information, Kendall Bar created a head cap for elephants seals, with sensors that allow the researchers to detect brain waves and determine when the seals are sleeping. This revealed that when underwater, seals are able to function through only two hours of rest because they decide this into thirty minute intervals. When they get tired they take a nap for thirty minutes and wake up full of energy.

Animals Eat Their Kids for Breakfast
- Cannibalism is occurs in the animal kingdom, and is quite normal, compared to the negative views of it found in humanity.
- Filial is when (many) organisms eat their children if they are crippled in anyway, or the parents simply can’t find anything else to eat to survive. This can also occur when the children are still inside the egg. This is due to the body’s natural survival instinct, because although they are their kids, they (kids) provide great nutrients which may be hard to find.
- A more violent version of this would be infanticide. This is when a male kills children in the group that aren’t their own, due to their territorial instincts. This often occurs in lion packs, when the females have cubs with the previous male leader, who was beaten and killed by a new leader.
- Another instance of cannibalism abong family is when siblings turn on each other because there aren’t enough resources in their environment to survive.
