A teenage boy is recovering after he was bitten by a jaguar he posed next to for a picture at a zoo in central .
The 14-year-old José was visiting the Zoo León in León, Guanajuato, on Saturday when he had his sneaker completely ripped off by the wild cat.
José hopped over a fence and approached the enclosure where several jaguars were held.
At one point, the feline scaled up the wall and stuck its mouth through the steel critter fence and clenched its teeth over the José's left foot. 
José is carried by his father and placed on a bench after he was attacked by a jaguar at a zoo in León, Mexico, on Saturday.

Video showed José's father carrying him over to a bench as the boy groaned in pain. Another person is seen in wrapping a belt around José's leg to keep pressure on the cut.
Footage also shows the jaguar chewing on the sneaker while it was still lying outside the fence before it was able to bring it inside the enclosure.
José was treated by Red Cross paramedics at the zoo and then rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors treated him for his injury.

A photo that was apparently shared by the family on social media showed the teen's foot missing a large chunk of the skin.
In a statement, Zoo León said José's injury was not life threatening and that it was providing support to his family. 
The zoo also called on all visitors to adhere to the facility's trespassing policy.
